Peatland Mini Module

Classroom Workshops and Activities

Peatlands are iconic Scottish landscapes tied deeply to our cultural roots. They are both unforgiving and beautifully unique, have a rich diversity of specialist species, provide multiple ecosystem services, and are integral to the rural economy and identity.

Scotland’s land is over 20% peatland and yet around 80% of it is degraded. In fact, Scotland’s peatlands release over 15% of the country’s greenhouse gases, second only to transport. As efforts to restore Scotland’s peatlands ramp up, we know there will be a need for more skilled workers, alongside further resources to support efforts to turn these important landscapes back into a natural carbon sink.

Peatlands are a great way to learn about climate change, biodiversity, and land-use. Many pupils will have been on or near peatlands, possibly without realising!

These lessons are designed to start with the 'basics' - introducing peatlands - and then any of the remaining lessons can be delivered as a one-off or in any order.

This video is good to recap the Basics lesson prior to other lessons if some time has passed.
