Resilient Hills

Catalysing Change

Resilient Hills is a programme of work borne out of the recognition from CCC's land management and restoration work that our uplands are eroding faster than we can currently restore them. From that noticing came more questions: Can we do more to stop the acceleration of erosion of our upland soils? How do we monitor changes using cost effective and practical methods? Can considered small scale native woodland creation work with peatland restoration? How does improving the hydrological function of our uplands benefit the wider catchment?

Across the UK, we lose an area of moorland the size of Birmingham each year, with 6,696 km² lost in Scotland between 1990 and 2023 (Heather Trust, 2025). This makes the work to restore and monitor our uplands all the more important.
