The CSmart Organisations project helps rural organisations across Dumfries & Galloway measure, monitor and take action to reduce their carbon emissions. During the 2 year project, CCC will work with 24 local rural organisations, providing guidance and assistance over a period of 6 months as they embark on their carbon journey.
The project team works closely with each organisation, guiding them through a series of key stages:
- Appointing a ‘Carbon Champion’ & Carbon Management Training of Key Staff
- Understanding your Organisation - Conducting a Baseline Carbon Footprint Assessment
- Holding a Carbon Opportunities Workshop
- Planning for Change - Developing a Carbon Management Policy & Action Plan
- Implementing a Carbon Management Action Plan & Monitoring Progress
Through the project, we are able to offer a wide range of assistance including staff training, guidance on communicating with customers and supply chain, assistance with accessing funding streams, sourcing local suppliers, and research into specific options.
Throughout the project a series of briefing notes and case studies will be produced, which reflect the needs and experiences of each organisation. These publicly available documents are also designed to raise awareness in the community and to inspire and guide other organisations towards becoming CSmart.

The funding also allows us to develop a helpful series of briefing notes on various topics relating to the issues faced by local organisations.
The project is joint funded by the Dumfries & Galloway LEADER Programme and Crichton Carbon Centre. It builds on CCC's previous Carbon Opportunities project, which saw CCC successfully deliver energy and greenhouse gas efficiency reports to over 50 businesses.
