In 2008 the CCC team worked with 55 small and medium enterprises in Dumfries & Galloway to help them lower their carbon footprint and address their energy issues. The project aimed to help the businesses develop carbon management strategies in order to reduce their carbon footprints. The programme was designed to be sufficiently flexible to allow organisations to participate in a manner that was relevant to their size and complexity.
Each audit developed a carbon footprint of the individual organisation and recommended practical ways to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that the company released. The scope examined activities ranging from raw material use, power consumption, transport and renewable energies to behavioural change.

Each business audited received a report containing energy saving measures and renewable energy technology alternatives. Of the 48 reports, 35 contain tangible figures relating to estimated annual energy, cost and carbon dioxide savings:

Throughout the project, CCC worked closely with enterprises to help them:
- Improve their environmental performance
- Reduce reliance on carbon based energy, helping to protect from future rises in energy prices
- Identify additional revenue streams
- Reduce operating costs
- Promote long term and sustainable change
CCC also organised the Future Homes Exhibition which aimed to bhange our perspective on building homes for the future. This Conference & Exhibition focused on Low Carbon Building, education, leadership & behaviour change.
The project ended with the Achievements & Beyond dinner, where the local enterprises who we had worked with were able to celebrate their successes.

The Carbon Opportunities project was so successful that funding has been secured for a second phase, ‘CSmart Organisations’, in which even more support will be provided to enterprises to encourage continued change and build upon the current good relations with businesses in the local area.
